Having just returned from Ireland after attending the Irish Men’s Shed conference, I am amazed at how the Men’s Shed movement continues to grow rapidly around the world. With some irony, the largest Men’s Shed gathering (or conference) is no longer held in Australia as Ireland now can claim this with over 500 shedders having recently gathered at the Pairc Ui Chaoimh (Cork Stadium).
In many ways this is something that we can all be proud of as we are all contributories to what is now a worldwide movement. Each and every country in which Men’s Sheds have developed have a deep appreciation for the men in Australia for giving them the Men’s Shed concept.
Time after time I heard stories from shedders of how the shed has played a significant role in their lives, and many of those state that this has even been a life changer for them and always the show their appreciation on a very personal level.
Domestically, this week is “Men’s Shed Week” with numerous events being held around the country celebrating the occasion. The theme for this year is “mateship” – which lies at the very heart of Men’s Sheds.
Recently we have seen many Men’s Sheds get behind programs to support communities affected by the drought crisis, this shows the true spirit of Sheds, looking after each other and the community.
Click the play button on the video below to watch a mateship video we put together with the help of Windale Men’s Shed. We also visited Nepean Men’s Shed and have shared a video on our AMSA Facebook page.
On another exciting note, our preparations for the 8th National Men’s Shed Conference are well underway. Our next biennual gathering of the Men’s Shed community will be held Tuesday 10 September to Thursday 12 September 2019, at Morphettville Racecourse (South Australia).
To celebrate Men’s Shed Week, we have a special Super Early Bird Registration (details below and in our newsletter). This package is a great deal and I encourage you to be quick to secure your place as spaces for this special offer are strictly limited.
Thank you to all the Sheds who recently participated in our 2018 Members Survey. AMSA plays a critical role as a national service provider for Men’s Sheds and the information gathered in our survey assists us to plan for the future needs of Men’s Sheds. With the development of new Men’s Sheds slowing in recent times, our focus is now on supporting a sustainable future for Men’s Sheds.
The AMSA team is a small but dedicated group, many of whom have been with Men’s Sheds for as long as Men’s Sheds have been around. If we can be of any assistance please don’t hesitate to contact us.
